All across America people’s hearts are mourning for the loss of the young children, aged 5-10, and the six adults that were heartlessly murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. To think of the cruel, evil soul that would first extinguish the life of his very own mother, and then gun down precious, tender-aged children is beyond comprehension.
But, as parents, what answers can we give our small children as they hear this horrific news? Their world was peaceful, serene and secure. Now thousands of children are going to be frightened to go to their place of learning.
The same place they enjoyed playing, eating and learning with their classmates is now a place of possible danger. Children are going to need more than a hug, kiss and pat on the back to reassure them that they will be safe while they are being educated.
How about offering your children true peace?
True peace only comes from one place. True peace comes from the Creator of the Universe. The One that created a peaceful environment for mankind. It comes from the same one that said,”Thou shalt not kill.” Yes, in this loving creator, there is peace.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3
You can give your children peace on earth by encouraging them to ponder upon their Creator. Children, especially young ones, light up when they are told about how God can see them, and how He loves them and how He is lives far away in heaven.
Every day I take a few minutes and talk to my toddlers about the one true God. I ask them,
“Where is God?”
“Does God love you?”
“Can God see you right now?”
Simple truths to teach a toddler, but thinking upon God himself will bring perfect peace.
The Bible also teaches us that Jesus Christ is our peace. Especially during the holidays we hear people singing with spirited voices “Peace on earth, goodwill towards men.” But, during the holidays there are more reported thefts, killings and numerous other crimes. We do not gain peace through festivities or material possessions. We only gain peace through Jesus Christ.
“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby : And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Ephesians 2:13-18
When your little ones lack security and have fear in their eyes, you can offer them peace through Jesus Christ. He is our peace!
