What to do When You’re Separated During the Holidays

Almost eight years ago my family and I embarked upon a journey — a journey that would cause us to be separated during the holidays from friends and family. We tearfully said our goodbyes and flew across the world to work in missions.

When Mother’s Day and my mom’s birthday rolled around it was tough. I’m my mom’s only daughter and I honestly feel guilty taking her grandkids and only daughter across the world. We miss Christmases, Thanksgivings and every other holiday that’s been special to our family.

During those times, it’s a blessing that I can send my mom some holiday cash to go shopping or grab a special meal. I know I can’t be with her, but it helps both of us to know that even though we’re far apart, our hearts and minds are still on each other.

When I’m sending my mom a cash gift overseas, I don’t want to worry if it will be stolen or get lost in cyber space. Xoom puts my mind at ease because it’s safe, secure and fast. It also has a mobile app that is used for two-thirds of its transactions — so it makes sending a gift super easy! Psst! If you’re still trying to snag a last minute gift for Mother’s Day, check out these e-gift cards and gifts from Paypal! I would happily take the Macy’s gift card for Mother’s Day — wink, wink!

Besides cash gifts, I make sure that my mom receives thoughtful messages, phone calls and pictures. The one below is one I took of all my kids wishing her and my dad a happy anniversary!

If I want to get my mom a certain gift besides cash, I can send money to another family member through Xoom and ask them to go shopping for me! My sweet sister-in-law has done that before — and she has great style in gift choices!

Xoom is the only remittances company that offers instant disbursements and you can select multiple ways for loved ones to receive money including bank transfers, cash pick-up or delivery, bill pay and mobile reload. I can also track each payment through SMS alerts so I know when the money is received.

Living overseas from a loved one doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate holidays together anymore, you just have to be a bit more creative!

I love it when I get a cheery phone call from a family member who received my surprise gift or cash. They never expected a gift from my family because we were an ocean away! Don’t let an ocean separate you from sending tokens of care, thought and love!

So what do you do if you’re separated from your family during the holidays? Don’t forget about your friends and relatives! Send them sweet emails, phone calls, texts and even some extra holiday cash as a “still thinking of you” from across the miles gift! Oh, and if you use Xoom services, you’ll have all the extra time you need to make videos for your loved ones, create super sappy emails and even leave a voice mail to send your holiday wishes — especially on Mother’s Day!
