Homemade Apple Pie Play Dough

Mmmm…is that apple pie I smell? Nah…it’s apple pie play dough!

Homemade play dough is always a hit with my kids! They love to create and play!

This is a simple apple pie play dough recipe that busy moms and busy kids can make in just a few minutes.

And it smells amazing!

In fact, sometimes we call this play dough recipe Country Apple Play Dough because it reminds me of my favorite body spray scent — Country Apple — ha!

We’ve also included some printable play dough mats to keep all the fun-making mess in one area a well as give kids a place to let their play dough imaginations run wild!

Apple pie play dough can be used to make anything kids imagine should be or actually are red.

Like red fire trucks.

Red houses.

Big red dogs…Clifford fans anyone? ;0)

Red choo-choo trains.

Play dough is also a fun way to play games or tell stories on Family Friday Night!

Instead of your typical Pictionary game, use play dough to “form” the words for your favorite dictionary or charades game. It’s fun to change things up a bit!

Homemade Apple Pie Play Dough


  • 2 cups of flour, divided
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tbsp apple pie spice
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Red food coloring


Add 1 cup of flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, apple pie spice, and cinnamon to a large pot.
Add 15 drops of red food coloring to the 1 cup of water.
Add the colored water to the pot.
Turn heat to medium low and stir well to combine.
Once combined, stir in additional 1/2 cup of flour.
In just a few minutes a dough will form.
Mix well, and be careful not to cook too long and burn the dough.
Dump the dough onto a cutting mat or plate.
Flour your hands and toss a small handful of flour over the playdough.
Knead the dough and work the extra flour through until it is the right consistency and no longer sticky.
Your playdough is ready!
