How One Community Came Together to Give

Several years ago, I was able to witness an inspiring act by strangers. I’m not going to say that it didn’t come with a few tears, or that hard work wasn’t involved. It did and it was.

This story is an example of how we need to stop thinking of ourselves as being “just a bystander” when you see someone going through a difficult time, because so often everyone thinks that same thing (“someone else will help them”) and then nothing gets done. Yes, I was able to witness an example of how people pulled together, stepped in, and helped.

A young boy, around ten years of age, had been in an accident and it left him unable to walk or use his legs at all. It was sad and hard to see. He and his family were struggling with this change in their lives. I should never have doubted, because this little boy brought a community together.

How could he do that? Within four months of his accident, his family was struggling financially. His mother had to quit work and now between medical bills and his therapy bills, they had nothing left to spend to make their home wheelchair accessible. They also could not afford to buy this darling child an electric wheelchair, which he desperately wanted. His entire life he never thought twice about walking into another room or walking around the corner. Now, it was only a seemingly unreachable dream.

Stop for just one minute and imagine how much this would impact your life — or better yet, the life of your child.

This family was too embarrassed to ask for help, but I was able to witness a community step in and meet a need! The community had come together to turn his home into a 100% wheelchair accessible home. His neighbors came together and built ramps, widened doors and lowered desks.

That special community arranged fundraiser, using www.giveforward.comGiveForward, to raise money to make the changes to the house, pay his medical bills and buy him an electric wheelchair. They contacted multiple companies and they were able to buy him an electric wheelchair.

They came together for the good of one person. They put someone else before themselves. They united for the betterment of someone else. They believed and practiced the Golden Rule.

Everyone has their own personal experience of how their life has been impacted by a crisis. What is yours? Do you know someone needing a hand right now? Can you find someone to help?
